Reading Books

We aim to read and change books with the children every week. Please ensure that your child has their reading book and journal in school every day to support their progress in reading. 

Reading Ambassadors

Every time your child reads at home, please record it in their reading records. This is classed as a 'read'.

After 25 reads, your child will be rewarded with the bronze badge and certificate. 

After 50 it's silver.

After 75 it's gold.

100 reads is rewarded with the 'Reading Ambassador' badge and certificate.

Homework

Homework will be given out every Friday. One side will have English work and the other maths.

The maths homework will cover an aspect the children have been learning in the week or a timetables activity.

The English will be a reading comprehension or a grammar and punctuation activity. 

Spellings will also be given out each week and will be tested the following week.

Reading should be a daily routine, with adults sharing books alongside children reading at their own level for at least 15 minutes each day. Please sign your child's reading record so they earn their Reading Ambassador awards.

PE kits

P.E Lessons will be on a Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Due to Health and Safety reasons, children who do not come to school with the correct PE kit will not be able to participate in PE lessons.

Children must have a red top, black shorts or joggers and black trainers (not pumps). Please do not send your child in with sports tops or patterned joggers.

If they do not have the correct kit mentioned above, children are to come to school in their school uniform with their PE kit in a bag and they can then get changed for PE before the lesson. 

Children must not wear earrings for P.E lessons and long hair must be tied back.

Look at our detailed lifelike drawing from the story. We have used widgit symbols and descriptions of key words and pieces of the text.  Can you find the words Julia Donaldson used to replace the word 'said'?

Warwickshire Cricket Club coaching:

Over the next five weeks, Year 3 will be taking part in Cricket lessons with a coach from Warwickshire Cricket Club. We had our first lesson today and the children really enjoyed taking part in the activities. They worked on the skill of throwing and catching. They learnt some handy tips too, for example, using aim and power when throwing a ball and how to position their hands when catching a ball. We are looking forward to the next five weeks!

Design and Technology - Textiles - Cushions

In our D&T lessons this week, the children have been learning how to sew! They have been practising lots of stitches such as, cross stitch, running stitch and blanket stitch. They have then designed their own small cushion, using techniques learnt throughout the week. They have then started to sew on some applique, alongside buttons and sequins! 

Art - Prehistoric Painting

In Art this week, the children learnt about prehistoric paintings. They then had a go at creating their own prehistoric painting. They created a textured surface to paint on using sand and glue! They then made their own natural paint using materials like paprika, clay and turmeric, combining them with water and flour. 

History - Dyche Collection

We were delighted to go and have a look at the Dyche collection today! We had some fabulous discussions, answering questions, looking at some of the photographs. The Dyche collection showed migration in Birmingham. The children used their smart speech when answering questions and the other children would either Agree, Build or Challenge their answer. 

Using Manipulatives in Maths!

In our Maths lessons this week, we have begun to look at exchanging. We have been using our place value counters and place value charts to show how we exchange 10 ones for 1 ten when adding 1s across 10s. We worked with our Maths partners and we swapped after each question either using the place value charts and counters or the whiteboards. 

School Grounds Week:

During School Grounds Week, Year 3 completed many exciting activities. We made our scarecrows; The Green Man and Mother Nature. We painted and decorated some tyres to bring some colour into our outdoor areas. We also planted a variety of bulbs that will blossom during spring. We had an outdoor maths lesson, using bean bags and hoops to practice our mental maths. We have also completed an autumn scavenger hunt, walking around the school grounds seeing what we could find. 

Stone Age Freeze Frames- Drama

During our session with Rob this week, we focused on the Stone Age. The children enjoyed playing a game of 'Me want food'! They then got the opportunity to create freeze frames of what the Stone Age people would be doing in their everyday lives. The children were hunting for animals, gathering fruits and berries, keeping warm by the fire and making tools.

Drama and Story Telling using puppets!

Year 3 have created their own puppets made from newspaper! They then spent their Drama session with Rob from @BirminghamRep acting out the story of Thumbelina. Later on in the day, Year 3 got the chance to bring their puppets to life by acting out the story using their puppets!
